The Final Strokes
It took a while, but I finally feel like I’m ready for the 508.
It wasn’t really until the last week of August that I felt like I had recovered well enough from my crash in June, and trained hard enough to make up for it, to the point that I was comfortable thinking about competing.
Now, after a few awesome weeks in the saddle, I’m ready to go out and do some damage.
I booked my flights today - I leave Toronto on Sunday the 27th of September, bound for Los Angeles. I want to spend the first couple of days scouting the route, and then we’ll do our final vehicle prep, etc.
Last weekend, I did a solo 24 hour ride to test out a few food theories that Larry and I have been working on. We could have covered more ground, but we were stopping each hour to test blood sugar in order to gauge the effectiveness of the new food strategy. Rather than go with a high-calorie meal every five hours like we did in May, we decided to try a lower calorie meal ever two hours instead. Based on the blood glucose readings and my general performance, this worked like a charm.
This will also have the side effect of allow us to simplify the food stores that we need to take with us. No yogurt, bananas, almond butter or anything like that this time. Just pure UltraMeal and flax oil mixed with water. Previously, we were mixing all of this together with soy milk to get an 800 calories smoothie. Just using UltraMeal, flax and water still gives me about 200-250 calories, but it goes down way easier and is much easier to prepare.
Tomorrow, I am heading up north to ride the 240k Halton Highlands Hilly Hundred. Last year, the fastest finisher was 9 hours, 15 minutes. I think I can do it in 8 hours, 30 minutes, or better. I’ll keep you posted :-)
