Ultra Rider: In Search of the Ultimate Long Ride RSS

Biking is one thing. Bicycling 100 miles is entirely another. But what about the bicycle ride that last all day and all night? At some point, you cross a line and at that point, cycling, becomes ultracycling.

This blog chronicles the story of a guy, his bike and a strange obsession with finding the outside edge of his personal limits.

In this chapter, having broken the UMCA record, recovered from a bone-crushing crash and achieving a top 15 finish at the inimitable Furnace Creek 508 we find our hero grappling with the realities of completing a 100km foot race.

For the complete story, follow this link, and read from the back to the front. The story won't make anymore sense when you've finished, but at least you'll know as much as the rest of us.

Planning the Training

Preparation for the ride is a much bigger undertaking than the ride itself. To prepare properly, I’m going to have to spend a lot of time getting better, stronger and faster over the next six months - that means time on the bike, time in the gym, time stretching, running and getting my headspace together.

I’ve been doing a lot of research to help me put together a training plan. I spent a pretty good amount of time tonight getting down to the specifics of what I’ll be doing each day of each week between now and the middle of May.

Between now and January, I’ll have put in at least 4000k just to lay down a solid base. And another 5000 to 6000k in January, February, March and April to get me faster and stronger. When all is said and done, I’ll have put in at least 10000 kilometers to get prepared for a single weekend of riding.

Crazy.

It seems daunting right now, but once I get the training plan together, I’ll be able to break it down into one month chunks which will let me hide most of the program from myself until I actually need to do the training. It got me through last winter, so I don’t see any reason this simple psychogical trick won’t work again.

Once I get the details of the plan nailed down, I’ll sanity check it with a few people and then post it here so that you can get a better idea of what I’ll be up to for the next few months.

Tomorrow I’m participating in the Ride for Karen. It should be a good fun ride. I’m completely not prepared for it, and you know what? I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’m going to have a good time and not worry one bit about anything but that. It will be one of the last non-training rides that I do, so I *have* to make sure I enjoy myself :)
