Ultra Rider: In Search of the Ultimate Long Ride RSS

Biking is one thing. Bicycling 100 miles is entirely another. But what about the bicycle ride that last all day and all night? At some point, you cross a line and at that point, cycling, becomes ultracycling.

This blog chronicles the story of a guy, his bike and a strange obsession with finding the outside edge of his personal limits.

In this chapter, having broken the UMCA record, recovered from a bone-crushing crash and achieving a top 15 finish at the inimitable Furnace Creek 508 we find our hero grappling with the realities of completing a 100km foot race.

For the complete story, follow this link, and read from the back to the front. The story won't make anymore sense when you've finished, but at least you'll know as much as the rest of us.

More on the knee

Went out for a laid back 60k loop with the club yesterday. I was treating it like a recovery ride and had no intentions of trying to “kill it” - or anyone else that had come along.

About 20k into the ride, my knee started acting up again. I dropped off the back almost immediately, and limped into the halfway point in Streetsville about 5 minutes behind everyone else.

The pain was bad, not as bad as the weekend prior, but bad enough that I didn’t want to be on the bike anymore.

One of my fellow riders is a doctor and he offered to take a look at it when we finished the ride. Coincidentally, he had forgotten his asthma medication and was suffering too, so we both had some pretty good motivation to cut the ride short.

We both made our way back at half speed to his offfice. After a pretty thorough poking and prodding, his diagnosis was that I had distressed the “vastus medialis” muscle (a part of my quadricep) where it attaches to the bone. It is more of an inflammatory condition than anything else, and with some active rest and Advil, I should be okay in a couple of weeks.

This means no cycling for two weeks, save a 15 minute spin twice a day to keep the joint moving.

I’m going to take the opportunity to get back to the gym and focus on eating better in advance of the start of my training. Updates to the blog might suffer, I’m not sure I’ll have anything exciting to talk about, but  will blog if something comes to mind.
