Biking is one thing. Bicycling 100 miles is entirely another. But what about the bicycle ride that last all day and all night? At some point, you cross a line and at that point, cycling, becomes ultracycling.

In this chapter, having broken the UMCA record, recovered from a bone-crushing crash and achieving a top 15 finish at the inimitable Furnace Creek 508 we find our hero grappling with the realities of completing a 100km foot race.

…the day begins in about five minutes. Didn’t get a great sleep last night. That’s okay I figure. I’ve got plenty of time to nap later today and besides, I won’t get any sleep on Saturday, so having regular sleep now might actually not be actually be the greatest thing. As long as cumulatively, I can get in enough snooze time to recover from the trip and rest up for the race, I should theoretically be okay…I think :) I got 5 hours last night and will get another 2-3 this afternoon…
