Ultra Rider: In Search of the Ultimate Long Ride RSS

Biking is one thing. Bicycling 100 miles is entirely another. But what about the bicycle ride that last all day and all night? At some point, you cross a line and at that point, cycling, becomes ultracycling.

This blog chronicles the story of a guy, his bike and a strange obsession with finding the outside edge of his personal limits.

In this chapter, having broken the UMCA record, recovered from a bone-crushing crash and achieving a top 15 finish at the inimitable Furnace Creek 508 we find our hero grappling with the realities of completing a 100km foot race.

For the complete story, follow this link, and read from the back to the front. The story won't make anymore sense when you've finished, but at least you'll know as much as the rest of us.

On goals attained…

If you remember, I had some goals for Sebring 24 - here they are again, with some additional commentary post-event…

Goal #1. Enjoy myself. I will hurt, I will want to give up, none of what I am about to do will be easy. All of it should be made enjoyable through a positive mindset and an appreciation of how far I’ve come.

Status: Accomplished. As much as it hurt, as formidable the obstacles became (50+ miles into a 16mph headwind!!) I always had a good headspace. Dare I say it, I enjoyed myself.

Goal #2. Finish. I will ride my bike for the duration of the event. I will not give up. I will not DNF unless my health is at risk, or my equipment prevents me.

Status: Accomplished. I rode the full 24 hours, and even in the dying minutes of the race, I was able to dig deep and ride just that much harder. Pat and Des had a stopwatch on me while I was off the bike for food and bio breaks, and all in, I was stopped for less than 90 minutes.

Goal #3. Ride competitively. I will make a top 10 placing in my age class.

Status: Accomplished. I finished 2nd in my age group and 23rd overall. I rode further than 89% of the people in the event. Definitely not a bad finish for a first timer.

Goal #4. Qualify. If I am able to meet these other goals, I will ride 425 miles in 24 hours.

Status: Not accomplished. I was 40 miles short of achieving this goal. I can tell you why I didn’t accomplish this last goal, but it sort of sounds like an excuse. All I can say is that now I’ve accomplished goals 1, 2 and 3, I can leave goal #4 until next year.
